Ohio's First Wind Farm Makes Way for Solar Revolution

The towering white giants that made Bowling Green, Ohio, a renewable energy pioneer are taking their final bow after more than two decades of service.

In 2003, this small city did something no other Ohio community had done: it built the state's first commercial wind farm. Those four turbines west of town became instant landmarks, their blades cutting through flat farmland and signaling to travelers that Bowling Green was just ahead.

Now crews are carefully dismantling what they once celebrated building. But this isn't a sad ending. It's a new beginning.

The turbines lived well beyond their expected 20-year lifespan, producing enough electricity to power 2,500 homes at their peak. They proved that small cities could lead the charge on clean energy, inspiring communities across Ohio to dream bigger about renewable power.

"They were great while they lasted," said Brian O'Connell, the city's infrastructure director. The problem wasn't commitment but technology. Finding replacement parts became nearly impossible, and repairs that once cost thousands now ran half a million dollars for a single gearbox.

The city planned ahead. For two decades, Bowling Green set aside money from utility rates, building up the $1.77 million needed for responsible decommissioning. The contractor will recycle the metals, concrete, and wiring, and evaluate major components for reuse elsewhere.

The Bright Side

Here's where the story gets exciting. Bowling Green isn't backing away from renewable energy. They're doubling down.

The city already partnered on a 20-megawatt solar field east of town. Now they're adding two more solar projects that will replace and expand the clean energy those wind turbines provided.

Bowling Green State University is leasing 50 to 60 acres for a new solar field, while a local business is offering another 20 acres. Both sites connect directly to the city's electric grid, making them perfect for efficient solar generation.

The wind turbines put Bowling Green on the map as Ohio's renewable energy trailblazer. The new solar fields will keep them there, producing more clean power than those four beloved turbines ever could.

Sometimes progress means letting go of what worked to make room for what works better.
