Oklahoma Event Combines Food and Music to Help Sick Kids

When Nadia McGahee was just 7 years old, a brain tumor called medulloblastoma changed her life forever. Now she needs a kidney transplant, but she's using her story to help other families facing similar battles.

On September 19, Nadia and fellow survivor Amari Whitaker will take center stage at Oklahoma City's History Center for an event unlike any fundraiser you've seen before. Small Bites & Sound Bites: Spirit of Survival transforms their medical journeys into a 10-course dinner experience, where each dish and song reflects a chapter of their resilience.

L. Patrice Bell, the event's creator, wanted storytelling that touches all the senses. Chef Ed Porter designed each course to match moments from the survivors' lives, while DJ Otis Preston, himself a sickle cell survivor, curates the soundtrack.

Amari's journey began at birth with a sickle cell anemia diagnosis and later developed avascular necrosis, a painful bone condition. Both young survivors will share their stories throughout the evening, helping guests understand what childhood illness really means for families.

The event perfectly times with September being both Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Sickle Cell Awareness Month. What makes this fundraiser special is how it turns awareness into direct action.
