Oklahoma Firefighters Rescue 15 Campers From Floodwaters

Fifteen campers woke up Sunday morning surrounded by water where dry land had been just hours before, but thanks to the Tahlequah Fire Department, they all made it home safely.

The group was camping near Spring Creek, about an hour outside Oklahoma City, when overnight storms dumped more than an inch and a half of rain on the area. By morning, what had been their peaceful campsite was cut off by fast-rising floodwaters.

The Tahlequah Fire Department received the call and quickly realized this wasn't a simple rescue. The floodwaters had made roads impassable, and the campers were too far from dry ground to walk out safely.

Firefighters launched rescue boats and navigated upstream through what are normally roads and hiking paths. Images from the scene show water cascading downhill like waterfalls where vehicles usually drive.

One by one, the rescue teams ferried all 15 people from the flooded campsite back to safety. The operation required skill, coordination, and courage as crews worked through areas they knew well but now looked completely transformed by rushing water.
