Oklahoma Principal Tackles Gunman, Saves Student Lives

A high school principal in Oklahoma became a hero on April 7 when he confronted and tackled an armed gunman who opened fire inside Pauls Valley High School. Principal Kirk Moore's quick thinking saved countless lives that day.

The incident unfolded at 2:21 p.m. when 20-year-old Victor Hawkins, a former student, entered the building carrying two loaded pistols. Surveillance footage captured Moore running toward the sound of gunfire instead of away from it.

Hawkins fired at Moore, striking him in the leg. Despite being wounded, Moore wrestled the gun from Hawkins' hand and, with help from other staff members, held him down until police arrived.

The suspect had attempted to shoot multiple students, but his weapon malfunctioned during several attempts. When he finally got a shot off at a student who raised his hands and begged not to be killed, Hawkins lowered his weapon and told students to leave.

Moore was airlifted to a hospital in stable condition and is recovering. No students were physically harmed in the attack.

Investigators discovered Hawkins had studied the Columbine school shooting and told them he "wanted to conduct his own school shooting." He now faces charges including shooting with intent to kill and carrying a weapon into a public assembly.

Moore's actions represent everything we hope for in school leaders but pray they'll never need to demonstrate. He ran toward danger to protect the students in his care, taking a bullet in the process.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation praised the rapid response. "The actions of the staff and the principal stepping in as soon as they saw a subject with a firearm saved lives today," said spokesperson Hunter McKee.

Other staff members also acted immediately to help subdue the gunman. Their combined courage turned what could have been a devastating tragedy into a story of protection and survival.

Moore's recovery continues, and every student at Pauls Valley High School went home safely that day because one man chose to stand between them and harm.
