Olympic Champ Carlos Yulo Chases Historic Asian Games Gold

Carlos Yulo has Olympic gold, world championship titles, and Asian championship victories, but one prize has eluded him: an Asian Games medal.

The Filipino gymnastics star gets another shot at history when he competes at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. At 26, Yulo brings an Olympic champion's confidence to a stage where no Filipino gymnast has ever reached the podium.

Yulo's résumé reads like a gymnastics dream: two Olympic golds from Paris 2024 in floor exercise and vault, three world championship titles, 11 Asian championship golds, and nine Southeast Asian Games victories. But the Asian Games remains unfinished business after he placed fourth in vault and seventh in floor exercise as an 18-year-old in 2018.

He skipped the 2023 edition to focus on qualifying for Paris, a decision that clearly paid off. Now he returns as one of the Philippines' brightest medal hopes, competing in the men's individual all-around across all six apparatus.

"I'm really giving more time now to the areas where I'm weak, especially the pommel horse and high bar," Yulo shared in an interview with GMA News. Those events have historically challenged him, but he's determined to turn weaknesses into strengths.

The competition will be fierce. Japan brings Olympic champions Shinnosuke Oka and Daiki Hashimoto, while China's Zhang Boheng arrives as the reigning all-around champion.

Why This Inspires

Yulo isn't carrying Philippine hopes alone. His younger brother, Karl Eldrew Yulo, 18, will make his Asian Games debut after winning bronze at the 2026 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

"At his age, he still has so much ahead of him," Carlos said of his brother. The sight of two Yulos competing for their country represents a new era for Philippine gymnastics, one where homegrown talent can stand toe-to-toe with the world's best.

The 14-member Philippine delegation includes five men's artistic gymnasts, five women's artistic gymnasts, two rhythmic gymnasts, and two trampoline specialists. Each athlete carries the same mission: break through barriers and show the world that Filipino gymnasts belong on the podium.

Yulo's best chances for gold likely come in his signature events, floor exercise and vault, where his Olympic-level skills give him a real shot against Asia's finest. But even competing in all six apparatus shows his commitment to pushing boundaries and testing himself on the biggest stages.

Whether he stands atop the podium or not, Yulo has already proven that Filipino athletes can reach the highest peaks in global sports.
