Olympic Champ Hidilyn Diaz Opens Weightlifting Gym in Manila

When Hidilyn Diaz walked into her brand new weightlifting center in Makati City, the Olympic champion couldn't hold back tears. "Kaya natin pala," she said, which means "So we're capable after all."

The Philippines' first Olympic gold medalist in any sport has turned her victory into opportunity for others. HD LiftOff officially opened its doors this week, giving young Filipino athletes access to world class weightlifting training and equipment.

Diaz won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, breaking a nearly 100 year drought for Philippine Olympic gold. Instead of resting on that historic achievement, she immediately started planning how to lift others up with her.

The Makati facility features professional grade equipment, dedicated coaching staff, and programs specifically designed for youth athletes. Diaz wants to prove that Filipino talent can compete at the highest levels when given proper resources and support.

"I want to showcase the sport and showcase Filipino talent," Diaz said at the emotional opening ceremony. Her voice caught as she looked around the gym, seeing her dream finally take physical form.
