From San Bernardino roller rinks to Olympic gold, Derek Parra proved that champions can come from anywhere. Now he's skating alongside the next generation in his hometown, showing Rialto students that their own podium moments are possible.

The 2002 Winter Olympics gold and silver medalist spent his weekend giving back to Rialto Unified School District students in two powerful ways. On Friday, the 1988 Eisenhower High School graduate laced up his skates at LA Kings Ice Town in Riverside, coaching local kids on the same ice where future dreams take shape.

The next day, Parra delivered the keynote speech at Rialto Unified's 19th Annual Family Summit at Wilmer Amina Carter High School. His message on grit and perseverance brought the crowd to its feet as he traced his unlikely path from inline skating to speed skating glory.

Parra's Olympic triumph in Salt Lake City happened on home turf in Utah, where he set a world record of 1:43.95 in the 1,500 meter race. He also captured silver in the 5,000 meter event, where he set another world record during competition.

Born in San Bernardino and raised in the Inland Empire, Parra now calls Utah home. But his roots in Southern California run deep, and his return reminds students that Olympic champions walk the same halls they do.
