Olympic Gold Medalist Proposes Atop Active Volcano

After 15 years of grueling biathlon training and an Olympic gold medal, Fabien Claude realized he needed more than just another season on the snow.

The French biathlon star made headlines at the Milano-Cortina Olympics last winter when he helped France win relay gold. But behind the triumph, Claude felt burnt out from over a decade of relentless competition on the World Cup circuit.

So he did something most elite athletes would never dare. He told his national team he'd skip their traditional training regimen and chart his own course to next season.

Claude and his girlfriend Maria Fabregat traded ski trails for beach sand, traveling first to the Maldives, then Indonesia, and finally New Zealand. It was there, nearly 2,000 meters up an active volcano, that Claude had something else planned beyond training.

At the summit of Mount Tongariro on New Zealand's North Island, he dropped to one knee and asked Fabregat to marry him. She said yes.

"A love story, a future yet to be written," Claude shared on social media, capturing both the proposal and his new philosophy on life.

Why This Inspires

Claude's decision shows that even at the peak of athletic achievement, listening to your heart matters most. After 11 seasons competing at the highest level with 32 World Cup podium finishes and ten victories, he chose to prioritize mental health and personal joy over tradition.

His unconventional training locations raised eyebrows in the biathlon world, where strict regimens typically rule. But Claude explained his reasoning simply: "I decided to do things differently this year, by traveling, training differently, and recharging my batteries."

The gamble reflects a growing understanding among elite athletes that burnout is real and recovery takes many forms. Sometimes the best preparation isn't another lap around the track but an adventure that reminds you why you fell in love with life in the first place.

Claude plans to return to the French national team in July, refreshed and newly engaged. He'll train under Norway's Siegfried Mazet, the gold medal-winning coach who just joined France after the Italian Olympics.

Whether this unconventional approach translates to more medals remains to be seen, but Claude has already won something more valuable: a renewed sense of purpose and a partner to share the journey ahead.
