Rookie Joaquin Tovera Leads La Salle to OT Win
La Salle rookie Joaquin Tovera willed the Green Archers to an inspiring 76-73 overtime victory against historic rival Ateneo. His breakout 21-point performance sealed La Salle's third consecutive win and moved the team into third place.
Nothing matches the electric thrill of watching a rising athlete turn childhood dreams into reality on college basketball's grandest stage. Rookie sensation Joaquin Tovera delivered that kind of unforgettable performance on Saturday at Manila's historic Araneta Coliseum.
The dynamic freshman powered the De La Salle Green Archers to a thrilling 76-73 overtime victory over longtime rival Ateneo. Facing immense defensive pressure, Tovera carried his squad with a game-high 21 points, seven rebounds, and six assists in a masterclass of composure.
The hard-fought triumph marked La Salle's third consecutive victory in the UAAP Season 89 men's basketball tournament. This clutch win broke a competitive standings deadlock and vaulted the Green Archers cleanly into third place with a 6-4 record.
Veteran guard JC Macalalag provided calm direction by contributing 11 points across nearly 39 grueling minutes on the hardwood. Six other teammates tallied at least five points each, proving that unselfish ball movement and collective trust anchored the Green Archers when it mattered most.
When regulation ended tied at 66 points, head coach Topex Robinson gathered his team to refocus on their core values. Robinson reminded the young athletes that the strongest dream wins the moment, urging them to embrace the rivalry and trust their shared preparation.
Ateneo's spirited young lineup fought with tremendous heart until the final buzzer, turning the intense clash into an uplifting showcase of collegiate talent. La Salle met that fierce challenge with disciplined defense, staying connected and calm through every second of the extra frame.
Why This Inspires
Tovera and his teammates demonstrated that true leadership is about lifting everyone around you when the stakes are highest. Their collective grit proves that young players can achieve remarkable feats when they replace self-doubt with courage and mutual faith.
When dedicated teammates support one another through every challenge, genuine belief turns the biggest dreams into lasting victories.
