Olympic Medalist Sara Groenewegen Joins Nevada Softball

An Olympic bronze medalist is trading international competition for a new mission: building championship-level college athletes in Reno.

Sara Groenewegen, who stood on the podium at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, has joined the University of Nevada softball coaching staff. The Canadian pitcher will work alongside head coach Victoria Hayward, her former Olympic teammate who shared that unforgettable bronze medal moment in Tokyo.

Groenewegen's resume reads like a softball dream. She earned three All-American honors at the University of Minnesota and won Big Ten Pitcher of the Year twice. Beyond college, she's collected three Pan American Games medals and two World Cup medals while representing Canada on the international stage.

The timing makes this hire even more remarkable. Groenewegen is still an active player preparing for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, meaning Nevada athletes will learn from someone currently competing at the sport's highest level. She spent the past three seasons at Stanford, most recently as the Cardinal's director of recruiting and technology.
