Ondo Governor Releases $670K to End University Strike

Students at Adekunle Ajasin University in Ondo State, Nigeria, have been out of class since July when their professors went on strike over unpaid salaries. This week, relief finally arrived in the form of a massive government intervention.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa approved a Special Intervention Fund of 1.1 billion naira (approximately $670,000 USD) specifically to pay the outstanding wages owed to university staff. The lecturers, represented by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, had gone unpaid for three consecutive months: May, June, and July.

The strike began on July 10 when professors walked out demanding not just their salaries, but also the implementation of previously negotiated agreements. For students eager to continue their education, the standoff meant closed classrooms and stalled academic progress.

"This gesture reaffirms the Aiyedatiwa administration's belief that a well-motivated workforce is critical to building a 21st century university that can compete globally," the governor's office said in a statement Wednesday. The Ministry of Finance received direct orders to release the funds immediately.

Union chairman Boluwaji Oshodi confirmed the union received word about the funding release but said professors would only return to work after seeing actual salary payments hit their bank accounts. It's a cautious approach born from experience. The same university faced a four-month strike last year over similar issues that lasted from August until November.
