"If food security is a national priority, then greenhouse innovation must be a national priority, too," says Professor Charles Conteh, who led the research team. He points to concerns many Canadians share: rising food costs, supply chain problems, climate change, and the need to grow more food at home.
The research team surveyed three dozen agricultural organizations to understand how growers, universities, tech companies, and government agencies work together. These groups collaborate on everything from developing new growing technologies to testing prototypes that help farmers produce more food efficiently.
Southern Ontario's greenhouse sector, including the Niagara region, plays a critical role in keeping Canadians fed with fresh vegetables throughout the year. The innovation happening there touches organizations ranging from individual farmers to Brock University and Niagara College, all working to turn new ideas into practical farming solutions.

The survey revealed strong cooperation in research and early technology testing. Organizations successfully work together on upstream research, prototype validation, and bringing new technologies to market.
However, gaps exist in helping farmers actually adopt these innovations and connecting technology developers with the people who need their solutions. The network also struggles with sharing data and coordinating information about regulations and workplace safety.

Strengthening this innovation system means more than just better technology. When greenhouse producers can adopt new tools more easily, they become more productive and competitive globally while responding better to environmental challenges.
The research team recommends federal and provincial funding commitments lasting five to seven years, giving innovators the certainty they need for long term projects. They also suggest creating a regional body to align priorities and reduce duplicated efforts across the sector.
Other recommendations include expanding industry driven research funding, improving coordination among regulators at all government levels, and developing standardized partnership agreements. The team also highlights the need for targeted support for racialized entrepreneurs in the agriculture innovation space.
Food security depends on the systems that help producers innovate, not just on growing more crops.
