Ontario Region Hits 4% Unemployment, Lowest in Province

A rural stretch of Ontario is proving that strong local economies can thrive even when bigger trends point the other direction.

The Stratford to Bruce Peninsula Economic Region, covering Bruce, Grey, Huron, and Perth counties in Midwestern Ontario, dropped to just 4% unemployment in August. That's a full percentage point lower than July and puts the region well ahead of the rest of the province.

The numbers stand out even more when you look at the bigger picture. Ontario's unemployment rate climbed to 7.3% in the same month, while the national rate sits at 6.4%.

The region now holds the title of lowest unemployment rate in all of Ontario. More than 1,400 jobs are currently posted across these four counties, waiting for workers to fill them.

The drop happened partly because 2,900 people left the labour force in August, which offset losses of 1,100 jobs in the region. Total employment now stands at 166,900 positions, split between full-time and part-time work.

The Bright Side

This rural success story shows that economic strength isn't just concentrated in big cities. The four-county region demonstrates how local labour markets can build resilience and create opportunities even when provincial and national trends move in different directions.
