Open Startup Launches Science Road for African Deep Tech

A pan-African organization is building a new bridge between African scientists and the world's markets, and the timing couldn't be better.

Open Startup, which has supported entrepreneurs across more than 20 African countries since 2016, just launched The Science Road on its 10th anniversary. The initiative focuses on transforming African scientific research and deep tech innovations into thriving, investment-ready companies.

The platform addresses a critical gap in Africa's innovation economy. Scientists and researchers often struggle to move breakthrough ideas from the lab to the marketplace, especially in fields requiring long development timelines and specialized support.

The Science Road simplifies this journey through two clear pathways. The first helps pre-seed innovators turn research and breakthrough ideas into investable ventures, while the second supports seed-stage startups scaling technologies that tackle major challenges.

Open Startup isn't stopping at acceleration programs. The organization launched Openers First, a new investment arm providing early-stage funding to promising ventures emerging from its platform, helping them bridge the crucial gap between pre-seed and seed-stage growth.

The numbers tell a story of steady impact. Over the past decade, Open Startup has supported over 1,000 startups, built a community of more than 500 mentors and advisors, and trained over 300 coaches across the continent.

Founder and CEO Houda Ghozzi sees this as a turning point. "We believe the Science Road can become a runway connecting Africa's innovators to the world—unlocking new opportunities for collaboration, investment, and scientific advancement," she said.

The Ripple Effect

The initiative arrives as African innovation ecosystems continue maturing, with research-led ventures increasingly ready for global competition. By focusing on health, climate, artificial intelligence, and adjacent technologies, The Science Road targets sectors where African innovation can address both local challenges and global markets.

The platform strengthens partnerships spanning from Tunis to South Africa, deepening collaboration with institutions like Stellenbosch University and LaunchLab. These connections help researchers move science closer to real-world adoption and commercial success.

Major partners including KfW AfricaGrow, the United States Department of State, the European Union, and universities like MIT and Columbia have supported this evolution. Their backing reflects growing recognition that African deep tech deserves targeted investment and support.

For ventures working on breakthrough technologies, the path from discovery to market just got clearer, and the resources to walk it just became more accessible.
