The OpenAI Foundation announced Thursday it's investing $100 million in the Breakthroughs to Follow-Through Initiative. The program partners with states and local communities to use AI tools that accelerate medical treatment research for serious health conditions.
Alabama, Illinois, Louisiana, and Massachusetts are the first states joining the program, with more expected to join over the next six months. Local organizations and nonprofits in each state will control how the grant money gets used, tailoring AI solutions to their specific community needs.
The initial focus targets hepatitis C treatment development. States can choose from various AI tools, including systems that identify patients overdue for screenings, platforms that help reconnect with patients who've fallen out of care, and AI assistants that free up doctors to spend more time with patients instead of paperwork.
"The organizations closest to society's greatest challenges have the deepest understanding of what communities need, but not always the resources or technical expertise to harness the latest advances in AI," said Anna Makanju, Head of AI for Civil Society and Philanthropy at OpenAI Foundation.

The grant money isn't locked into any single AI platform. States have complete freedom to select the tools that work best for their communities and medical goals.
Dave Chokshi, chair of the Common Health Coalition partnering on the initiative, emphasized that technology supports but never replaces the human side of healthcare. The AI tools are designed to handle administrative tasks and data analysis so medical professionals can focus on building relationships with patients.
The Ripple Effect
Beyond just providing access to cutting-edge technology, the initiative includes infrastructure support to help states move from testing AI tools to actually using them in real-world medical settings. Technical experts will work alongside local health departments to ensure smooth implementation.
The federal government isn't involved yet, but organizers say they're open to collaboration as the program grows. Similar ideas have already appeared in Congress, including a bill introduced in July that would use AI to accelerate pediatric cancer research.
For patients in participating states, this could mean shorter waits between a medical discovery and receiving treatment that could save their lives.
