Orange County Fair Generates $331M and 5,960 Jobs

The Orange County Fair isn't just cotton candy and carnival rides. A new economic study reveals the beloved summer tradition pumps $331 million into the local economy and sustains nearly 6,000 jobs.

The three-week celebration in Costa Mesa drew 1.05 million visitors in 2024, according to a report by Johnson Consulting. Those fairgoers filled over 13,000 hotel rooms, generated $11.6 million in sales tax, and brought $384,600 in hotel tax revenue to local cities.

"These are some really significant numbers," said James Canfield, chief executive of the Orange County Fair & Event Center, during a board meeting. The findings surprised even longtime fair organizers who knew the event mattered but didn't realize just how much.

The fairgrounds contribute even more when you count year-round activities like concerts, farm programming, and the Heroes Hall veterans museum. In 2024, the site welcomed 4.55 million total visitors who booked 67,300 hotel nights throughout the year.

The Ripple Effect

Those numbers translate into real paychecks for real families. The fairgrounds operation sustained 5,960 jobs in 2024, creating $312.5 million in wages across the region.

Restaurants near the fairgrounds see their busiest weeks during the fair. Hotels book solid. Local shops stock up on supplies. The economic boost touches businesses far beyond the ticket gates.

Board Director Doug La Belle urged staff to share the findings with tourism groups like Travel Costa Mesa and Visit Anaheim. "The more they help us do things, the better it is for them," he said, emphasizing the partnership between the fair and local businesses.

The report also revealed that fairs nationwide generate $30 billion in economic impact annually. Nearly 1,400 fairs across the country attract close to 100 million attendees each year, making the fair industry a major but often overlooked economic driver.

This year's Orange County Fair runs July 17 through August 16 with the theme "Your Adventure Awaits." The economic data gives communities one more reason to celebrate beyond the Ferris wheel rides and deep-fried Oreos.
