Oregon Adds 126 EV Charging Ports Across State Highways

😊 Feel Good

Oregon is installing 24 new fast-charging electric vehicle stations along its major highways, bringing 126 charging ports to travelers from the coast to eastern Oregon. Several stations could be charging cars within the next year.

Electric vehicle drivers in Oregon are about to have a lot more options when they hit the road.

The Oregon Department of Transportation just announced 24 new fast-charging stations coming to highways across the state, from coastal Route 101 to Interstate 84 stretching east to Ontario. Each station will have between four and eight charging ports, adding 126 new places for EV drivers to power up.

The first stations could go live in as little as 12 months. They're part of a federal push to build a nationwide charging network along major highways and interstates over five years.

The locations span the entire state. Eight stations will line Interstate 84 between Portland and Ontario, making the cross-state journey easier for EV drivers. Seven more will serve central and southern Oregon, while five will dot the scenic coastal highway.

Two stations are headed to the Willamette Valley cities of Corvallis and Albany. One will serve rural Harney County, helping fill gaps in eastern Oregon's charging infrastructure.

The stations will pop up at familiar stops: Love's Travel Stops, Fred Meyer stores, hotels like Super 8 and Best Western, and local businesses like Dinty's Market & Deli in Wasco. Drivers will be able to charge while grabbing coffee, using the restroom, or stretching their legs.

Oregon is getting this upgrade thanks to $52 million from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, funded by the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The state transportation department's Climate Office selected the companies for this second round of grants just last week.

The Ripple Effect

This buildout goes beyond just convenience for current EV owners. More charging stations mean more Oregonians can confidently consider switching to electric vehicles, knowing they won't be stranded on road trips or rural routes. Rural communities especially benefit, as towns like Riley, Wasco, and Rockaway Beach get the infrastructure that makes EV ownership practical.

The department isn't stopping here either. A third round of grants launches this summer, targeting remaining rural gaps on highways 82, 42, 95, and stretches of Routes 101, 20, and 26. Oregon is systematically ensuring that clean transportation works for everyone, not just city dwellers.
