Oregon Hospital Re-Earns Baby-Friendly Certification

New parents walking into Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center's maternity ward can now trust they're entering one of the most supportive spaces for infant feeding in the entire state.

The Corvallis hospital just earned re-designation as a Baby-Friendly facility from Baby-Friendly USA after passing a rigorous review process. Out of thousands of hospitals across Oregon, only two currently hold this prestigious international certification.

The Baby-Friendly standard isn't just a feel-good label. It's built on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, a set of practices developed by the World Health Organization and UNICEF based on solid research about what helps newborns thrive in their crucial first days.

About 437 hospitals across America currently meet these strict criteria, joining more than 20,000 facilities worldwide. Each one commits to providing mothers with consistent support, education, and resources to help breastfeeding work for their family.

"We are extremely proud to be recognized for the hard work of our team members throughout the Baby-Friendly process," said Brandon Schmidgall, the hospital's administrator. The Center for Women and Families staff trained extensively to earn this distinction.

The science behind the certification is compelling. The U.S. Surgeon General described breast milk as uniquely suited to infant nutritional needs, packed with immunological and anti-inflammatory properties that protect babies against illness and disease.
