Orlando Dreamers Push for MLB Team in Tourism Hotspot

Orlando might be known for theme parks, but a determined group wants to add baseball diamonds to the city's attractions.

The Orlando Dreamers, co-founded by late NBA executive Pat Williams and COO Jim Schnorf, are working to bring a Major League Baseball team to Central Florida. With over $2 billion already committed under letters of intent for stadium financing and team acquisition, this isn't just a pipe dream.

Orlando brings some compelling advantages to the table. The city welcomes 80 million tourists annually, making it the most visited destination in the Western Hemisphere. It's also the biggest media market in America without an MLB team.

"There's an anomalous absence of professional baseball from the Orlando market," Schnorf explained. Unlike competing expansion cities that have Triple-A or Double-A teams, Orlando has no professional baseball presence at all.

The group has unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art stadium near SeaWorld, just off Interstate 4. They're hoping to fund construction partially through Orange County's tourism resort tax, which generates more revenue than any other metro area in the country.

Why This Inspires

The Las Vegas model shows how tourism can fuel sports success. The Golden Knights and Raiders have thrived in a city built on visitors, proving that tourist dollars can translate into packed stadiums and passionate fanbases.

While a county task force recently declined to move forward with the stadium proposal during election season, Schnorf remains optimistic. The Dreamers only had 15 minutes to present their $975 million request, far less time than such proposals typically receive.

Some skeptics point to Florida's two existing teams, the Tampa Bay Rays and Miami Marlins, which struggle with attendance. But Schnorf notes that in 1969, California supported five MLB teams with a smaller population than Florida has today.

Orlando is the fastest-growing metro area in the fastest-growing state in America. The combination of explosive population growth, massive tourism, and zero baseball competition creates a unique opportunity for expansion.

The Dreamers believe their city can definitely support Major League Baseball, and with billions in backing, they're ready to prove it.
