Orlando Volunteer Helps Young Writers Publish Their Stories

Ethan Robertson spends his summer watching young writers light up when they realize their stories matter.

Robertson volunteers as a creative writing coach with Page 15, an Orlando nonprofit that helps students write and publish their own original stories in just a few days. The camp offers something he wishes he'd had growing up: a place where creativity gets celebrated without judgment.

"Students are allowed to explore and write about whatever they like, and they are always celebrated for that writing," said Alexandra Smith, Programs Manager at Page 15. The relaxed atmosphere stands in sharp contrast to high-pressure school environments where many students feel anxious about sharing their work.

Robertson's path with the organization started as a paid internship. He liked it so much that he came back as a volunteer, now using his background in animation and illustration to give students extra creative outlets while they develop their storytelling skills.

The small nonprofit relies heavily on volunteers to run its programs. Smith calls her team "small but mighty," noting that volunteers like Robertson bring both dedication and valuable experience that helps bring the organization's vision to life.

Why This Inspires

The impact shows up in unexpected ways. Former campers Izzy and Ellie Poissant loved the experience so much they returned as volunteer coaches themselves.

"I'm a very anxious person, so seeing the teachers were very nice, I just felt calm and relaxed," Izzy said. Her sister Ellie agreed, appreciating the chance to do something she loves in a supportive space free from academic pressure.

Robertson says volunteering energizes his own creativity too. Working with young writers has made him more spontaneous and confident in his own ideas, creating a cycle where helping others helps himself grow.

Through volunteers who believe in their mission, Page 15 continues giving young writers a safe space to discover their voices, build confidence, and take pride in stories that are uniquely their own.
