Owensboro Catholic Wins 7th Regional Title After Comeback
The Lady Aces dominated Daviess County 51-32 to capture their first regional championship since 2023, getting sweet redemption after blowing a 16-point lead to the same team weeks earlier. Now they're headed to Rupp Arena with their confidence sky-high.
After watching a 16-point lead disappear in seven painful minutes just weeks ago, the Owensboro Catholic Lady Aces weren't about to let history repeat itself.
The team dominated the 3rd Region Championship on Saturday, defeating rival Daviess County 51-32 to claim their seventh regional title under Head Coach Michael Robertson. It's their first championship since 2023 and a ticket straight to Kentucky's iconic Rupp Arena for the state tournament.
"We wanted our revenge," said Lady Aces player Sophia Newby. "We wanted to make sure we didn't make the same mistakes against them again."
The Lady Aces came out swinging, jumping to a 9-2 lead and holding Daviess County's star player Kennedy Lane scoreless in the first quarter. By halftime, Owensboro Catholic had built a commanding 27-10 advantage.
In the second half, the team turned up the defensive pressure even higher. They forced 15 total turnovers and never let their opponents find a rhythm, even as Lane scored 15 of her 18 points after the break.

Newby dominated inside with 14 points and crucial rebounds, while Taylor Mannahan led all scorers with 17 points. The team shot an impressive 57.5% from the field and 50% from three-point range.
"Just knowing that it was win or go home," explained Claudia Munsey, who added 14 points. "Our goal was to go to Rupp Arena. We told ourselves the next shot is going in."
Why This Inspires
This story shows what happens when a team refuses to be defined by a single loss. Instead of letting their district championship collapse crush their spirit, the Lady Aces used it as fuel to come back stronger and more focused.
Their redemption came against the very team that had beaten them, proving that setbacks can become stepping stones when you learn from them. Coach Robertson praised not just their stellar defense, but their unselfish ball movement and team-first mindset.
For Daviess County, the season still held major victories. The Lady Panthers finished 27-6 and won their first district championship since 2012, giving their five graduating seniors a season to remember.
The Lady Aces face Letcher County Central on Thursday at 6 PM ET in the state tournament's opening round, carrying momentum and a powerful lesson about resilience into Kentucky's biggest high school basketball stage.
