Zverev Wins US Open Six Years After Heartbreaking Loss

Alexander Zverev served for the US Open championship and was so locked in that he forgot the score entirely.

The 29-year-old German defeated American Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 on Monday to claim his second Grand Slam title of 2026. After firing his final serve, Zverev calmly walked to the baseline, ready to play the next point before his team told him the match was over.

"In that moment I was in the zone a lot. I didn't hear noise at all," Zverev said. "It's funny because tennis teachers always tell you to just play the next point and forget about the score."

The victory was especially sweet given his painful history at Flushing Meadows. Six years ago, Zverev served for the championship against Dominic Thiem but lost in five sets after holding a two-set lead.

During that 2020 trophy presentation, a tearful Zverev said, "I wish one day I can bring the trophy home." Now his wish has come true, and he's brought home two Grand Slam trophies in three months after winning the French Open in June.

Zverev credited his mother for believing in him after his childhood type 1 diabetes diagnosis. "When doctors tell you that life and sports will be very limited for that child, it takes a very strong mother to say 'my son will be whatever he wants to be,'" he said.

His father and coach, Alexander senior, watched courtside as his son delivered one of the best serving performances of the tournament. Zverev won 39 of 42 points behind his first serve in the opening two sets.

Zverev's journey shows how perseverance transforms heartbreak into achievement. He faced a hostile crowd of 24,000 fans cheering for Shelton but never lost his composure or his belief.

Former British number one Annabel Croft marveled at his mental strength. "I'm so admiring of his strength of character and the zen-like state he's been in," she said. "I don't think I've ever witnessed someone not realizing they had won."

The world number two now has momentum heading into the final stretch of the season, with the top ranking within reach. Germany went 30 years without a men's Grand Slam champion, and now Zverev has delivered two in one magical year.
