Zverev Wins US Open After Heartbreaking 2020 Loss

Six years after one of tennis's most painful losses, Alexander Zverev finally got his moment of redemption at the US Open.

The German star defeated American Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2 on Sunday at Arthur Ashe Stadium, claiming his second career Grand Slam title. It was a victory years in the making for the world's top-ranked player.

Back in 2020, Zverev was two points away from winning this same tournament. He had taken a commanding two-set lead against Dominic Thiem but became the first man since 1949 to blow that advantage in a final.

This time, nothing could stop him. Zverev was so locked in during the match that he didn't even realize when he'd won, continuing to play as if the score was still 5-1.

The crowd of nearly 24,000 fans desperately wanted to see an American champion. Shelton was attempting to become the first American man to win the US Open since Andy Roddick in 2003.

But Zverev graciously acknowledged the atmosphere during his trophy presentation. "I know today 99.9% of the people wanted Ben to win, so I'm very sorry first of all," he said with a smile.

Zverev credited his team for never giving up through the difficult years. "I think God has seen how hard we worked, how much we suffered, and how much pain we went through, and I think 2026 is the outcome of all the years that happened before," he said.
