Palm Springs Kicks Off 3-Day Juneteenth Freedom Weekend

Palm Springs is rolling out the welcome mat for everyone to celebrate freedom, community, and shared history this Juneteenth weekend.

The Palm Springs Black History Committee and city organizers have planned a vibrant three-day "Juneteenth Freedom Weekend" starting Thursday evening, June 18. The free celebration honors the historic day in 1865 when Union Army General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that all enslaved people were finally free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

The festivities kick off at 7:00 p.m. Thursday during Palm Springs' beloved VillageFest street fair along Palm Canyon Drive. Special cultural programming will feature live music, family activities, and booths highlighting local Black-owned businesses and artisan vendors.

On Friday, June 19, the actual Juneteenth date, Downtown Park hosts a free Unity Picnic at 5:00 p.m. Families can enjoy food vendors, music, and outdoor activities before settling in for a 7:00 p.m. concert featuring Debby Holiday performing an energetic Tina Turner tribute show under the stars.

The weekend wraps Saturday at the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center with the annual Juneteenth Youth Pageant at 5:30 p.m. The $10 ticketed event celebrates young people's talents, leadership, and academic achievements from across the Coachella Valley.
