Paris Shelter Adds Gym, 80% Report Better Health in Month
A Finnish company installed outdoor gym equipment at a Paris homeless shelter, and the results after just 30 days show remarkable improvements in both physical and mental health. Even better, 90% say it helped them connect with others.
When Omnigym installed outdoor fitness equipment at a Paris homeless shelter, they hoped exercise might improve lives. One month later, the results exceeded expectations.
The Finnish gym equipment company partnered with Emmaüs Solidarité, a French nonprofit supporting people experiencing homelessness, to bring physical fitness directly to shelter residents. They placed the equipment in the courtyard and tracked how it affected daily life.
The numbers tell a powerful story. After just 30 days, 80% of residents reported improved physical health since the gym arrived. But the benefits went far beyond stronger muscles.
Ninety percent of respondents said the gym helped them meet and talk to other people. In a community often isolated from social connection, the equipment created natural gathering spaces where conversations could happen.
The personal stories reveal even deeper changes. When asked what they appreciated most, one resident shared that the gym sparked "a change in behavior. I smoke less." Another simply called it "a change" in their life, "even if only a little."

Residents also reported better mental wellbeing, improved sleep, elevated mood, and higher energy levels. The project collected anonymous data and self assessments to measure these impacts scientifically.
The Ripple Effect
CEO Kirsti Laasio calls the initiative The People's Gym. "We want to democratize physical training and make it accessible to everyone," she explains. The project addresses a growing public health concern about inactivity, especially in lower income communities where gym memberships and fitness resources remain out of reach.
The shelter gym removes every barrier to exercise. No membership fees, no commute, no intimidating atmosphere. Residents can work out whenever they want, building healthy habits into their daily routines naturally.
The success in Paris could inspire similar projects worldwide, bringing fitness resources to communities that need them most.
Small changes can create meaningful transformation, one workout at a time.
