Parrot Explores Ocean Floor in Custom-Built Submarine

Forget snorkeling lessons. One adventurous parrot just took his first underwater voyage in a homemade submarine, and the internet can't get enough.

Bebe, a white-winged parakeet, recently explored the ocean floor off the Bahamas in what his owner Steven Lawyer calls the "Bebosphere." The custom vessel, built from a plastic food container and a paintball air tank, safely carried Bebe three feet below the surface for 15 minutes while Lawyer snorkeled alongside.

The 60-year-old blogger spent weeks preparing for the adventure. He tested the submarine extensively in his home sink, equipped it with air valves, and installed an oxygen meter with an alarm system to ensure Bebe's safety.

Video of the voyage shows Bebe bobbing peacefully in his clear vessel, watching fish and coral pass by. The clip has racked up 4.3 million views on Instagram, with viewers marveling at the tiny explorer's calm demeanor.

While some expressed concern, Lawyer emphasized that Bebe entered the submarine willingly. "He went in willingly and he enjoyed it," he told The Washington Post, adding that the bird showed no signs of distress during any of the practice runs.

This underwater trip is just the latest adventure for the dynamic duo. Since Lawyer bought Bebe at a Florida pet store in 2020, the parakeet has been skiing, skydiving, and on week-long bike rides. Paragliding is next on their bucket list.
