Part-Timer Corey Heim Wins First NASCAR Cup at San Diego

Corey Heim has only started 13 NASCAR Cup Series races, but he just drove like a champion.

The 22-year-old part-timer snatched the lead from points leader Tyler Reddick with just two laps remaining at Naval Base Coronado on Sunday. Heim stalked his teammate around the challenging 16-turn, 3.4-mile street course before making his move when it mattered most.

The victory gave 23XI Racing a dream 1-2 finish, with Bubba Wallace crossing the line more than 10 seconds behind Heim. The team, co-owned by driver Denny Hamlin and NBA legend Michael Jordan, celebrated their young driver's breakout moment in NASCAR's newest venue on Coronado Island, just south of downtown San Diego.

Reddick looked poised to win until a cruel flat tire in the closing laps dropped him to 25th place. Kyle Larson rounded out the podium in third, followed by Zane Smith and AJ Allmendinger.

The race delivered plenty of drama beyond the thrilling finish. A massive nine-car crash on lap 32 caused a nine-minute red flag for wall repairs. Pole-sitter Shane van Gisbergen got caught in the chaos and finished 38th, ending his bid for an eighth road or street course victory.

Why This Inspires

Heim's victory writes a familiar underdog script for NASCAR's street races. This marks the second time in three years that an inaugural street race has crowned a first-time Cup Series winner. Shane van Gisbergen made history by winning his very first Cup race at the 2023 Chicago Street Race.

The young driver won't stay part-time for long. Heim moves into a full-time ride next season with 23XI Racing, and Sunday's performance showed exactly why the team believes in him. He stayed patient, learned the tricky course, and struck at the perfect moment against more experienced competition.

NASCAR heads north to California's Sonoma Raceway next on June 28, but this weekend belonged to a kid who proved that opportunity plus courage equals victory.
