Pastor Walks 50 Miles With Shopping Cart on His Back
A Blackpool pastor just set a world record by walking nearly 50 miles in 24 hours with a 66-pound shopping cart strapped to his back. He pushed through painful blisters to raise over $3,000 for families facing food insecurity.
James Baker didn't just walk a marathon with groceries on his back. He walked two marathons to help feed his community.
The 40-year-old pastor at Kings Church in Blackpool, England, circled a 400-meter track 200 times wearing a family-sized shopping cart loaded with pasta sauce, kitchen roll, and fabric softener. The total haul? A grueling 49.7 miles in under 24 hours, all while carrying 66 pounds on his shoulders.
Baker started his record attempt at 1 pm on April 8th at Stanley Park Sports Arena. For the first 14 hours, he kept a steady pace, walking 45 minutes at a time with 15-minute breaks. Friends and family walked alongside him in the warm 64-degree weather, cheering him on.
Then the blisters hit. Around 3 am, severe blisters formed on both feet, and the temperature dropped. The crowd thinned out, leaving Baker mostly alone on the dark track. "It felt like I was walking on glass for a good six hours," he said.
His pace slowed from about 15 minutes per mile to nearly 25 minutes per mile. But he kept going. At 11 am on April 9th, after completing his goal distance, Baker finished with a victory lap surrounded by supporters.

Why This Inspires
Baker's quirky world record came from a heartfelt place. The shopping cart idea sparked during a charity hike up Mount Snowdon, Wales' tallest mountain, to benefit Blackpool Community Grocery. This organization tackles food insecurity across the seaside town, helping families who struggle to afford groceries.
"One of the walkers said I should use a trolley," Baker explained. "It was a perfect visual way of showing what I wanted to raise money and awareness for." He'd already carried a loaded cart to the top of Mount Snowdon and back as training.
The campus pastor spent three months preparing, adding treadmill sessions with 100 pounds of weight plates to his regular workouts. But he credits his secret weapon to his gardening job. "Carrying heavy equipment and being on my feet for eight hours a day really helped," he said.
Baker is awaiting official confirmation from Guinness World Records for the greatest distance carrying a shopping trolley in 24 hours by a male. It's believed to be the first record of its kind. This isn't his first rodeo either. He already holds the world record for the farthest distance pulling a vehicle in 24 hours at 32 miles.
So far, his painful walk has raised over $3,000 for families who need help putting food on the table. Sometimes the most extraordinary acts of service come wrapped in the most ordinary packaging.
