Pegula Defeats World #1 Sabalenka to Reach Berlin Final

Jessica Pegula just proved why champions never give up, rallying past world number one Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 6-7, 6-0 to reach the Berlin WTA final for the second time.

The American fourth seed faced tough odds. Sabalenka had beaten her nine times in their previous twelve meetings, and the Belarusian star brought her powerful game to the grass court Saturday.

Pegula started strong, capitalizing on Sabalenka's shaky forehand to take the first set 6-2. But the world number one fought back in the second set, forcing a tiebreak that seemed to shift momentum in her favor.

Then rain interrupted play with Pegula leading 3-1 in the tiebreak. Two and a half hours later, when they returned to the Steffi Graf court, Sabalenka seized the opportunity and won the set.

That's when Pegula turned on the jets. The American dominated the deciding set, winning six straight games to close out the match 6-0 after two hours and 13 minutes on court.
