Pennsylvania Unemployment Drops to 4.2% Despite National Rise

Pennsylvania workers have something to celebrate this month. While unemployment rose nationally to 4.4% in February, the Keystone State saw its rate drop to 4.2%, defying the nationwide trend.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry released encouraging numbers showing 7,000 more residents found work in February compared to January. That means 2,000 fewer Pennsylvanians were searching for jobs, bringing the state's civilian labor force to 6,588,000 people actively working or looking for work.

The state's performance stands out even more when you look at the bigger picture. Over the past year, Pennsylvania's unemployment rate climbed just one-tenth of a point, while the national rate jumped twice as much.

Healthcare and education led the way in job growth. These sectors added 28,500 positions compared to last February, showing strong demand for teachers, nurses, doctors, and healthcare support staff across the Commonwealth.

Not every sector saw gains. Trade, transportation, utilities, and some education and health services shed 5,900 jobs each in February. Still, seven of the state's 11 major job categories added positions, pushing total employment growth to 18,800 jobs over the year.
