Pennsylvania Unemployment Hits 3.7%, Lowest Since May 2024

Pennsylvania just hit a jobs milestone that shows real economic momentum building across the state.

The state's unemployment rate fell to 3.7 percent in August, down from 4.4 percent a year ago and marking the lowest rate since May 2024. That puts Pennsylvania a full four-tenths of a percentage point below the national unemployment rate of 4.1 percent.

The numbers get even better when you look at who's working. Pennsylvania's civilian labor force reached a record high of 6,659,000 people in August, meaning more Pennsylvanians are either working or actively looking for work than at any point in the state's history.

Total employment also hit an all-time high while 11,000 fewer people were looking for work compared to July. The state added 5,800 nonfarm jobs in a single month, with gains across seven of eleven major industry sectors.

Three sectors set their own employment records in August. Healthcare and education services, financial activities, and leisure and hospitality all reached new peaks, showing strength across diverse parts of the economy.

Trade, transportation, and utilities led August's growth with 1,700 new positions. Over the past year, healthcare and education services added the most jobs with 23,600 new positions, reflecting growing demand in these essential fields.

When unemployment drops while workforce participation rises, it signals genuine economic health rather than people simply giving up on finding work. Families across Pennsylvania are bringing home paychecks, businesses are confident enough to hire, and more residents feel optimistic enough to enter or reenter the job market.

The state's performance compared to national trends shows Pennsylvania isn't just riding a national wave. The commonwealth is outpacing the country's unemployment improvements, with a seven-tenths percentage point drop over the year compared to the national two-tenths decline.
