Pensacola Unity Fest Celebrates 4th Year of Juneteenth Joy

When Adoration for New Beginning Church in Pensacola threw open its doors for Unity Fest on Friday, families of every background showed up to celebrate freedom and prove division doesn't have to win.

The fourth annual event honored Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in America learned they were free. More than a history lesson, Unity Fest has become a living example of what bringing people together can accomplish.

Families enjoyed live music, free food, and educational activities designed to teach kids about Black culture and resilience. A dedicated kid zone meant parents could relax while children played, and community resource booths connected neighbors with local support services.

Volunteer coordinator Charis Davis explained why Unity Fest matters now more than ever. "Right now in the world, there's so much division, everybody's against each other," she said. "We just wanna show, one, celebrate our history, and two, show that we are still here."

Walking through the crowd, Davis's point became clear. People of different races, ethnicities, religions, and cultures gathered in the same space, sharing meals and stories. "We wanna show that we are a united front and not divided," she added.

The Ripple Effect

The festival's growth tells its own story about what happens when communities choose connection over conflict. What began as a small gathering now draws over a thousand people annually.

Meanwhile in nearby Crestview, the city hosted its own Juneteenth celebration featuring a "Walk Through History" experience. Actors brought key moments of Black and American history to life, making the past feel immediate and real for hundreds of attendees.

Crestview was the first city in Okaloosa County to host a Juneteenth celebration. Like Pensacola's Unity Fest, their event has grown from a few hundred attendees in year one to more than a thousand today.

Both celebrations share the same mission: creating welcoming spaces where people can learn together, reflect on how far we've come, and celebrate the ongoing journey toward justice. Organizers hope these annual traditions will continue expanding, proving that even in divided times, showing up together makes all the difference.
