Researchers at Peru's Pontifical Catholic University, working with local company Dinamo Tecnologías, have created foldable solar panels inspired by Miura-Ori, a Japanese origami technique. The panels unfold with one smooth movement and collapse back down when you're done using them.
The breakthrough addresses a real problem for people working on small boats and in remote mining sites. These workers typically rely on noisy fuel generators that guzzle gas and require constant maintenance. Available space for traditional rigid solar panels is almost nonexistent.
The team's full-scale prototype weighs just 6 kilograms and generates 388 watts of power. When unfolded, it measures 1.8 meters by 1.1 meters. When folded, it fits in a standard suitcase you could easily transport in any vehicle.
Project leader Daniel Lavayén and mechanical engineers Enrique Pujada and Davy Olivera focused first on small fishing boats. These vessels typically operate for eight hours, then sit idle for 16 hours while generators keep electrical systems running for crew and equipment.

The foldable panels won't completely replace generators. Instead, they dramatically reduce how many hours those generators need to run, cutting fuel costs, noise pollution, and maintenance headaches in the process.
"One of the ideas was to reduce the number of hours the generators ran, not to replace them 100% with photovoltaic systems," Pujada explained.
The team is now developing multiple versions. Some will be extra flexible to handle the constant motion and impacts of naval work. Others will use more rigid structures suited for industrial mining applications in hard-to-reach locations.

This innovation extends far beyond Peru's coastline. Millions of people worldwide work in remote locations where transporting and installing traditional solar panels is nearly impossible. Fishing communities across Asia, Africa, and Latin America face the same challenges: limited deck space, high fuel costs, and environmental concerns about constant generator use.
The foldable design also opens doors for emergency response teams, remote research stations, and mobile medical clinics. Anywhere people need reliable power without the luxury of permanent infrastructure could benefit from solar panels that pack up and move as easily as a laptop.
By making solar power truly portable, these Peruvian engineers are proving that sometimes the best high-tech solutions draw inspiration from centuries-old art forms.
