Petersburg Girls Cross Country Team Sweeps Regional Win

The Petersburg High School girls cross country team swept the Region V Championship in Juneau last weekend, bringing home their second regional title in three years and sending every single runner to the state finals.

All six girls on the team finished in the top 15, crushing competitors from Wrangell, Craig, Haines and other Southeast Alaska schools. Their winning score of 11 points shows just how dominant the Vikings were on the historic Treadwell Mine Trail course.

The secret to their success isn't complicated. Head coach Kaylei noted that when the team's fastest runner pushes herself, it creates a chain reaction that lifts everyone's performance.

"They are all pushing each other and I think they like that," the coach explained. This positive competition within the team turned individual talent into collective excellence.

While the girls claimed the team championship, sophomore Andi Mihai also made his mark as the only boy from Petersburg to qualify for the state meet. His achievement adds another layer of success to what's already a banner year for Vikings cross country.

The Ripple Effect

Petersburg is a fishing town of just over 3,000 people on Mitkof Island in Alaska's Inside Passage. For a community this small to produce six state qualifiers in one sport shows what young athletes can accomplish with dedication and mutual support.

The team's success reflects hours of training on island trails, early morning practices in Alaska's challenging weather, and the kind of teamwork that turns good runners into champions. These girls didn't just win for themselves but gave their entire community something to celebrate.

Their victory also demonstrates that small schools can compete at the highest levels when athletes commit to lifting each other up rather than just chasing individual glory.

The state championship meet awaits these six Petersburg Vikings, who've already proven that success multiplies when teammates become each other's biggest fans.
