Philippine Student Wins Gold at Earth Science Olympiad

Rodney Corbin P. Sarmiento just made history for the Philippines at one of the world's most challenging science competitions.

The Grade 12 student from Nabua National High School took home an individual gold medal at the 19th International Earth Science Olympiad in Turin, Italy. He became only the second Filipino to achieve this feat since the country first won gold in 2011.

The competition ran from August 20 to 27, 2026, bringing together young earth science enthusiasts from around the globe. Sarmiento competed in both individual challenges and team events that test everything from geological knowledge to environmental problem solving.

He didn't stop at the individual gold. Sarmiento also helped the Philippine team secure a silver medal in the International Team Field Investigation, where students work together to examine real world geological and environmental challenges.

This victory didn't happen overnight. Sarmiento first proved himself at the Philippine Earth Science Olympiad, where he advanced from the national finals. He then competed at the Earth Science Festival in Tsukuba, Japan, earning bronze and securing his spot on the national IESO team.

At Nabua National High School, Dr. Raquel Togores mentored Sarmiento through his preparation. Her guidance helped him tackle the demanding competition requirements and develop his scientific skills.

Governor Luis Raymund Villafuerte of Camarines Sur celebrated the achievement as proof of what young Filipinos can accomplish. "You showed an entire generation what is possible when talent is matched with dedication, discipline and the courage to pursue excellence," he told Sarmiento.

The Ripple Effect

Sarmiento's gold medal sends a powerful message to students across the Philippines, especially in provinces outside Manila. It proves that world class education and achievement can happen anywhere with the right combination of student determination and teacher support.

His success could inspire more schools to strengthen their science programs. It also highlights the value of international competitions in developing young Filipino scientists who can compete globally.

For Sarmiento himself, the medals weren't the only reward. "Meeting kind and intelligent people from all corners of the world, all against the backdrop of the beautiful Italian Alps, was an experience I will never forget," he said.

His achievement opens doors not just for himself, but for every young scientist in Camarines Sur dreaming of their own moment on the international stage.
