Philippines Uses Geofencing to Protect Farms and Add Solar

The Philippines just found a smart way to solve two problems at once: sky-high electricity bills and protecting the food supply.

Two government departments are teaming up to draw digital lines around three million hectares of prime farmland, especially rice-growing areas. The "geofence" will show solar energy companies exactly where they can and cannot build, keeping panels off land needed for crops.

It's a timely solution. The Philippines now has some of the highest energy prices in Southeast Asia, and the country has been racing to add solar power. In just the first four months of this year, the Philippines imported 4 gigawatts of Chinese solar panels, with another 3 gigawatts on the way by July.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. proposed the digital boundary system, which will be formalized through an agreement expected in October. The approach guides developers to suitable land instead of blocking them entirely.

The government isn't just protecting farms from solar development. It's actively encouraging projects that combine both through special auctions for "agrisolar" and "aquasolar" installations that pair renewable energy with farming or fishing.

These hybrid projects can breathe new life into abandoned or underused land and water while supporting rural communities. The Department of Energy says the approach delivers clean power alongside sustainable food production.

The Ripple Effect

This balanced strategy shows other countries how to expand renewable energy without creating new problems. Nations worldwide face similar tensions between energy needs and food security, and the Philippines is proving you don't have to choose.

The country plans to auction 25 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2035, with multiple green energy auctions scheduled over the next two years. Last year alone, the Philippines added 899 megawatts of solar capacity, bringing the total to nearly 4 gigawatts.

By setting clear boundaries now, the Philippines protects its agricultural heartland while becoming a leading solar hub in Southeast Asia.
