Australia Hits Solar and Battery Records in Clean Energy Surge

Australia's clean energy revolution just hit fast-forward, with the nation breaking records across rooftop solar, home batteries, and large-scale renewable investments all in one quarter.

New data from Australia's Clean Energy Regulator shows rooftop solar installations topped 1 gigawatt for the first time between April and June. That's enough solar panels to power roughly 300,000 homes, beating the previous record set just months earlier.

Home battery installations exploded too. More than 111,000 batteries were approved in the quarter, with homeowners adding 3.6 gigawatt-hours of storage capacity. That means families can now store solar energy during the day and use it after sunset, slashing their power bills.

Large-scale solar projects saw their strongest quarter since 2022, with investors committing $1.8 billion to utility-sized solar farms. Nearly half of that came from projects backed by government support programs designed to accelerate the transition.

The numbers reveal how quickly Australia is moving away from coal. Renewable energy now accounts for 42% of electricity generation in the National Electricity Market, jumping from 37% just one year ago.

What's driving the boom? Battery prices keep falling, making storage affordable for average families. Government rebate programs are helping too. Australia's Cheaper Home Batteries Program sparked such massive demand that more than 80% of solar installations in April included a battery, as homeowners rushed to grab incentives before program changes took effect in May.

This clean energy surge creates wins that multiply across society. Lower electricity bills give families breathing room in their budgets. Cleaner air means healthier communities. And Australia is proving to the world that rapid renewable transitions are possible at scale.

The momentum extends beyond homes. Starting in October 2026, the government will expand rebates to cover mid-sized solar systems up to 1 megawatt. That means farms, schools, and small businesses can finally afford solar installations that match their energy needs.

"The speed of the transition is accelerating," said Carl Binning, Acting Chair of the Clean Energy Regulator. His team tracks every solar panel and battery installed across the nation, and the data shows Australians embracing renewable energy faster than experts predicted.

Even as battery rebates shifted in May, demand stayed strong. System sizes adjusted as incentives changed, but homeowners kept installing. The clean energy wave isn't slowing down.
