Phillipsburg Softball Ends 23-Year Semifinal Drought

For the first time since 2003, Phillipsburg High School softball players will compete in a county semifinal, and they earned it the hard way.

The Stateliners rallied twice from behind to defeat Hunterdon Central 5-4 in eight innings during Monday's Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament quarterfinal. Seniors Addison Fallon and Alexis Forder combined for six hits, showing up exactly when their team needed them most.

Down 3-1 in the fifth inning, pinch hitter Eleri Fersch sparked the comeback with an RBI single. The team tied the game in the sixth when Fallon drove in a run with a clutch single up the middle, and Forder followed with another RBI to knot the score at 3-3.

When Hunterdon Central reclaimed the lead, Phillipsburg refused to fold. In the eighth inning, Fersch stepped up again and drew a bases-loaded walk to score the winning run.

Junior pitcher Hannah Wodtke threw all eight innings, striking out six batters while keeping her team in the fight. Three defensive errors made her job harder, but she never wavered.

"This team is special," said coach Kristin Polet. "They have the attitude that they are excited from the first pitch to the last, and they never give up. You cannot count us out no matter how far we fall behind."

Why This Inspires

Twenty-three years is a long time for any program to wait. Players who weren't even born when Phillipsburg last reached this stage are now making history themselves.

The victory means more than advancing in a tournament. It represents a culture shift for a program that hasn't posted a winning season since 2018 and stands at 9-4 this year.

Every player contributed to Monday's win, from the starting lineup to pinch hitters who delivered when called upon. That kind of team-first mentality creates something lasting, something that future players will remember and try to match.

The Stateliners already beat top-seeded Delaware Valley earlier this season, proving they can compete with anyone. Saturday's semifinal will test whether this team's never-quit attitude can carry them even further into history.
