Phoenix Volunteers Fix Car Lights for Immigrant Families

Matt Gonzales pulled into a Phoenix parking lot on Saturday with a broken tail light he couldn't find time to fix. Within minutes, volunteers welcomed him in and repaired it for free, giving him something he hadn't felt in weeks: peace of mind.

More than a dozen community members showed up to Puente's free vehicle inspection event on Saturday. The Arizona-based human rights group focuses on helping immigrant communities stay safe and connected.

Volunteers checked brake lights, tail lights, and license plate lights on every car that arrived. When they didn't have the right bulb on hand, they went out and bought it themselves.

Gonzales was struck by the immediate warmth of the experience. "I felt welcomed immediately as I pulled up," he said. "They didn't even know I was coming here, and they immediately were like, 'Come in, come over here.'"

The turnout showed just how much people needed this service. Organizer Judith Coronel said drivers started forming a line two hours before the event officially began.

The Ripple Effect

The volunteers who made this happen weren't professional mechanics. They were regular community members who showed up at Puente's food banks and other events and simply said, "I know how to change a light bulb. I can help you."

That spirit of neighbors helping neighbors is exactly what Coronel says makes these events possible. "Without them and the community, we really couldn't do anything like this," she said.

The repairs serve a dual purpose: they keep people safe on the road and help them avoid unnecessary traffic stops for minor violations. A working tail light might seem small, but it can make a huge difference in someone's daily life.

For volunteers and organizers alike, the event proved something powerful about what communities can accomplish when they look out for each other.
