Phoenix Volunteers to Clean Salt River on April 11

When trash piles up along a river that feeds one of Arizona's most important bird habitats, sometimes all it takes is neighbors willing to roll up their sleeves.

This Saturday, April 11, volunteers of all ages will fan out along the Salt River near Tolleson to tackle illegal dumping that's been plaguing the area. The cleanup starts at 8 a.m. at 6000 South 91st Avenue, just steps from the Tres Rios Wetlands.

Rio Reimagined is leading the effort alongside the City of Phoenix, Arizona State University, and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. Waste Management and Keep Phoenix Beautiful are also lending support.

The timing couldn't be better. The cleanup site sits right next to Tres Rios Wetlands, a restored river environment that's become a haven for diverse bird species. Protecting this ecological treasure requires ongoing community care, especially in areas where illegal dumping threatens the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

Anyone aged 8 and up can join, though younger participants need a parent or guardian along. Parking is available on the west side of 91st Avenue between Broadway and Baseline roads.
