Phone-Free Events Up 567% as Young People Unplug

The same people who made smartphones essential are now choosing to leave them at the door.

Phone-free social events skyrocketed by 567% globally between 2024 and 2025, according to Eventbrite data tracking gatherings labeled "phone-free," "analog," or "offline." Gen Z and Millennials, the first generations to grow up with social media, are driving this dramatic shift away from constant connectivity.

The movement goes far beyond a weekend detox. These unplugged gatherings now span the entire calendar year, with attendance jumping 121% as the trend expanded from 5 countries to 12.

The United Kingdom leads the charge with phone-free events growing by 1,200% and attendance surging by 1,441%. This aligns with Britain's ongoing national focus on combating loneliness and social isolation through face-to-face connection.

The United States shows a different pattern but equally strong momentum. While event volume grew by 388%, attendance exploded by 913%, suggesting Americans are hungry for authentic, screen-free experiences once they discover them.

The growth is accelerating faster than expected. In just the first three months of 2025, phone-free experiences already reached over a third of the previous year's global event volume.

The Ripple Effect

What started as fringe gatherings organized by groups like Europe's Offline Club and US-based Kanso has become mainstream behavior. Young adults who witnessed social media's rise are now intentionally creating spaces free from algorithms and constant visibility.

This isn't about rejecting technology entirely. It's about reclaiming control over when and how we connect, choosing presence over performance.

The shift signals something deeper: a generation recognizing that the most meaningful moments happen when we're fully there, not halfway scrolling. As phone-free gatherings continue their rapid expansion across continents, they're proving that sometimes the best way forward is to put down what's holding us back.
