Pitcher Makes History With No-Hitter in MLB Debut

Imagine stepping onto a major league mound for the first time knowing one mistake could ruin history.

That's exactly what Houston Astros pitcher Alimber Santa faced Monday night when manager Joe Espada called him in to preserve a no-hitter during his MLB debut. Santa delivered two perfect innings, striking out his final batter to complete the combined no-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Texas Rangers.

The 23-year-old became the first pitcher since 1900 to participate in a no-hitter during his big league debut, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Starting pitcher Tatsuya Imai threw six hitless innings, followed by reliever Steven Okert's one inning of work, before Santa entered in the eighth.

"Yeah, there was some adrenaline," Santa said through a translator after the game. "I was aware of the no-hitter, but I was just trying to calm myself down from the bullpen."

Santa's historic night ended with him striking out Brandon Nimmo for his first career strikeout. As the final out was recorded, his teammates rushed the field to celebrate the milestone moment.

Manager Joe Espada said he felt immense pride watching Santa handle the pressure. "I've seen this kid for years, and just to have this moment is huge for the organization and for him," Espada said.

The combined no-hitter marked the Astros' 17th regular season no-hitter in franchise history. Houston has been on a remarkable run, authoring three of the past seven and five of the last 11 major league no-hitters.

For Santa and his family watching from home, it was a dream debut that exceeded all expectations. Most players hope to simply get through their first game without major mistakes. Santa instead etched his name in the record books with a performance that will be remembered for generations.
