Plastic Drain Saves 50M Litres of Rainwater in India
An entrepreneur turned recycled plastic and smart design into a drainage system that stops flooding while storing millions of litres of rainwater under city streets. Over 5,000 Indian cities now use Eco Bloc to turn monsoon chaos into water security.
When Chennai flooded in 2015 and then suffered severe drought four years later, entrepreneur RR Sivaram saw a cruel irony. The same city that drowned in rainwater was desperately thirsty just years later.
His solution was Eco Bloc, a drainage system made from recycled plastic that doesn't just channel water away but captures it for the future. Unlike conventional concrete drains, this innovation includes rainwater harvesting structures every 15 metres along city roads.
The honeycomb design captures up to 96 percent of rainwater that falls on streets. A four-stage filtration system removes silt and debris, then stores the clean water in underground tanks hidden beneath roads and parks.
These aren't fragile containers. The modular tanks can bear up to 60 tonnes of weight, last over 50 years, and can be moved or recycled when needed. Strong enough for city traffic, smart enough for India's water crisis.

Sivaram installed the first system in Chennai in 2020. Within one year, it revived a temple tank that had been dry for 12 years. The proof was undeniable.
The Ripple Effect
Today, Eco Bloc operates at over 5,000 locations across India, harvesting more than 50 million litres of rainwater. Cities that once dreaded monsoon season now see it as an opportunity to refill their water reserves.
The system costs 15 to 20 percent less than conventional stormwater drains while solving two problems at once. Cities reduce flooding and build water security with the same infrastructure.
Every monsoon, Indian cities used to brace for waterlogged streets and wasted rainfall. Now, with each installation of Eco Bloc, those same streets become underground water banks. The innovation transforms a seasonal burden into a year-round resource.
As climate patterns grow more unpredictable, solutions like Eco Bloc prove that thoughtful engineering can turn environmental challenges into opportunities. Sivaram didn't just build a better drain; he reimagined what city infrastructure could do when designed with both problems and solutions in mind.
