Plow Driver Saves Cat Trapped in Storm Drain

A stray cat in Bellmore, New York used one of its nine lives this week when an entire neighborhood dropped everything to pull off an unlikely rescue.

On Monday morning, as snow piled up across Long Island, the cat slipped into a storm drain filled with snow. Local animal rescue activist John Debacker spotted the trapped feline and immediately tried to lift the grate with other neighbors. Even with several people pulling, the metal cover wouldn't budge.

Then fate stepped in. A snowplow rumbled down the street at exactly the right moment.

Debacker and the growing group of neighbors flagged down the driver, who didn't hesitate to help. Using the plow truck's equipment, they finally lifted the heavy grate. But the frightened cat had retreated deeper into the pipes.

The rescuers left food near the opening and kept watch through the cold night. By Tuesday morning, the cat emerged safe and hungry, ready for a well-deserved meal.

Rebecca DiFebo, a Deer Park resident who joined the rescue effort, watched the community rally around one small life. Neighbors stood together in the snow, a plow driver altered his route, and Debacker used his rescue experience to coordinate the effort.
