Poland Gets 31 Electric Buses in $36M Green Transit Push

Thirty-one new electric buses are now carrying passengers across Poland's Upper Silesian region, marking a major milestone in the country's push toward cleaner public transportation.

Spanish manufacturer Irizar delivered the fleet to GZM, the metropolitan authority serving cities including Katowice, Gliwice, and Sosnowiec. The delivery includes 16 articulated 18-meter buses for high-capacity routes and 15 standard 12-meter buses for lighter traffic areas.

The $36 million project isn't just about buses. Irizar also installed 20 charging stations across four municipal depots, ensuring the vehicles can actually do their jobs without relying on diesel backup.

Poland's National Recovery Plan covered more than 91 percent of eligible costs. That government support reflects how seriously the country is taking its clean energy transition.

The buses are part of GZM's Green Transport program, which aims to replace aging diesel fleets with zero-emission vehicles. Four different transit operators now have access to the same electric platform, which should make maintenance and training more efficient across the region.

This delivery fits into something bigger. GZM is bringing 73 battery-electric buses to the region through various contracts, with Solaris supplying 42 additional vehicles.

The metropolitan authority isn't betting everything on batteries either. Eight hydrogen buses are already running under a separate program, with plans for 24 more electric buses and 16 additional chargers in the pipeline.

The Ripple Effect

For commuters across four Polish cities, this means breathing cleaner air while getting to work. Electric buses produce zero tailpipe emissions, reducing pollution in urban areas where people live, work, and raise families.

Poland's electric bus expansion is also creating momentum for similar projects across Eastern Europe. Irizar now has contracts covering 80 electric buses in five Polish cities, including Warsaw and Kraków.

Warsaw's upcoming buses will even carry solar panels rated at more than one kilowatt, squeezing extra efficiency from every ray of sunshine. Kraków is expanding from four electric buses to 26.

The project shows what's possible when government funding meets practical planning. GZM didn't just buy buses; they built the charging infrastructure and trained operators to use them effectively.

As these 31 buses roll through Polish streets, they're proving that major cities can transition to clean transportation without sacrificing service quality or reliability.
