
Poland's Drought Forces Coal Plants to Close, Solar Surges

Earlier this week, energy giant Enea had to slash output at two major coal plants when the Vistula River dropped to critically low levels. The plants need huge amounts of river water to cool down, and there simply wasn't enough. The shutdown cut 1.3 gigawatts from Poland's grid, enough to power more than a million homes.
The Vistula's flow near the Kozienice Power Plant plummeted to just 135 cubic meters per second on August 5. That plant alone needs to withdraw up to 100 cubic meters every second for cooling. During the drought, the plant was trying to use more than half of what remained in the river.

Here's where the story takes a hopeful turn. While coal plants sat idle and hydropower dropped across Europe, solar energy stepped up in a big way.
The same hot, dry weather that crippled thermal power plants created perfect conditions for solar panels. Solar generation across the EU jumped more than 20 percent in 2025, producing more power than ever before. Even when wind and hydro fell short, solar filled the gap.
