Poland's First Olympic Gold Winner Drove Bus Full of Gold

Poland's first Olympic champion risked everything to save her country's gold from Nazi invaders, and a new coin celebrates both her athletic glory and wartime courage.

Halina Konopacka made history at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics by winning gold in the discus throw. She dominated women's athletics for years, earning 27 Polish national championship titles across multiple sports including javelin, long jump, tennis, basketball and handball.

But when Germany invaded Poland in 1939, the celebrated athlete took on a very different mission. Konopacka joined her husband, former Treasury Minister Colonel Ignacy Matuszewski, in a daring operation to evacuate Poland's gold reserves before Nazi forces could seize them.

She didn't just accompany the mission. She got behind the wheel of one of the buses carrying the precious cargo and personally helped unload heavy crates during the dangerous journey.

The evacuation route wound through Romania, Turkey and Syria before finally reaching France. The gold was saved, preserving Poland's financial future during the darkest days of the war.

Konopacka paid a personal price for the mission. In the chaos of the evacuation, she lost her Olympic gold medal forever.

The National Bank of Poland released the commemorative coin on September 1, the anniversary of the German invasion. The 10-złoty silver coin features gold bars and a period bus on one side, honoring the evacuation. The other side shows Konopacka with an Olympic track and laurel branch.

Konopacka's story shows how heroism takes many forms. She could have stayed safe, resting on her Olympic glory. Instead, she drove a bus through war-torn countries, risking capture to save her nation's future.

The coin's release date carries special meaning. What began as Poland's darkest day became a reminder of the courage that helped the nation survive.

Only 8,000 of the silver coins will be minted, each one a small tribute to a woman who won gold twice: once on the track, and once on a dangerous road through war-torn Europe.

Poland remembers its heroes, even when their greatest acts went unrecognized for decades.
