Portland Cafe Serving 11,000 Free Meals Eyes Gaza Next

When 42 million Americans faced losing food assistance last October, Heretic Coffee in Portland made a simple promise: come in hungry, leave fed.

One year later, they've served 11,000 free meals. Now they're dreaming bigger.

Owner Josh White announced last month that Heretic Coffee is partnering with the Humanite Peace Collective to build a sister cafe in Western Gaza. The new shop will serve free meals daily to people rebuilding from war. And it has a new name: The Department of Peace.

"Coffee is a sense of community throughout the entire Middle East," White told Good Good Good. "We thought: what if we call this the Department of Peace and put the idea of what it means for Palestinians to have peace back in the hands of Palestinians?"

The plan faces real challenges. Western Gaza neighborhoods sit in rubble. The risk of future conflict looms. White's first-time question as a cafe owner: what if our coffee shop gets bombed?

Still, he's moving forward with clarity and realism. The cafe might start as a 200-square-foot brick building rebuilt from rubble. It could begin as a cart or tent. The Humanite Peace Collective, with 20 years of experience helping displaced communities in conflict zones, already has local teams ready to build and run the operation.

They need $100,000 to break ground. White hopes to serve meals by Christmas. He calls it ambitious, maybe even a miracle.

But miracles keep happening at Heretic Coffee. When federal food cuts hit, donations poured in within hours. They've raised over $400,000 in public support to keep their Portland breakfast program running. When other charities need help, the Heretic community responds fast. They raised $6,000 in 24 hours for an Atlanta homeless shelter. When vandals shattered their front door in August, supporters sent $10,000 to fix it and keep serving.

"If we can raise $10,000 for our door, I think we can do $100,000," White said.

The Ripple Effect

What started as one cafe's response to federal cuts has grown into a movement of daily generosity. Heretic Coffee proves that community support doesn't stop at city limits. Their breakfast program continues feeding Portland neighbors every morning while inspiring people nationwide to fund meals for strangers. Now that model of showing up with food and no questions could help rebuild community in one of the world's most devastated places.

White and his team aren't just exporting coffee. They're putting tools of hope directly in local hands, trusting people who've lost everything to build something beautiful together.
