Portugal Adds 340 Officers to Speed Airport Lines

Travelers heading to Portugal this summer will find a much smoother airport experience waiting for them.

The country is deploying 340 additional public security police officers to its airports starting July 4, all specially trained in border control procedures. Lisbon will receive 140 officers, Porto gets 100, and the rest will spread across Faro, Funchal, and Ponta Delgada.

The boost comes after travelers faced frustrating waits at Portuguese airports in recent weeks, with Lisbon hit hardest by the delays. Interior Minister Luís Neves announced the expansion on Friday, signaling the government's commitment to fixing the problem quickly.

Portugal had already sent 48 officers to Lisbon airport last week as an immediate response. The larger deployment represents a more comprehensive solution as summer travel season kicks into high gear.

The timing couldn't be better. Portugal's airports are seeing record traffic, with one Saturday recently marking the busiest day of the year for passenger volume.

Minister Neves shared encouraging news about recent operations. "Saturday may have been the day of the year when the most passengers used Portuguese airports, and the situation went very well," he said.
