Postcard From Parents Arrives 26 Years After They Mailed It

A postcard mailed from Copenhagen in July 2000 finally reached its destination in August 2026, bringing comfort to a son who never got to say goodbye.

Bob Sheppard was checking his mailbox at his Long Beach, California home when he discovered the weathered postcard from Denmark. His parents had sent it during one of their many adventures around the world, writing a simple message: "Flying in, we saw lots of water and green, green land everywhere. Love, M&D."

The timing made this ordinary postcard extraordinary. Both of Sheppard's parents had passed away in recent years. His mother Joanne died four years ago, and his father John died six years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Because of hospital restrictions during the pandemic, Sheppard never had the chance to properly say goodbye to his father. "It haunts me to this day," he said.

Finding a handwritten message from his parents more than two decades after they sent it hit him hard. "I just started looking at it and go, 'Oh my gosh. This is a treasure!'" Sheppard recalled.

His parents loved exploring the world together, visiting Easter Island, the Galapagos, and Africa. Sheppard had collected photographs and passport pages documenting their travels, assembling them for their celebration of life. Now the postcard has become another precious piece of their story.

Where the postcard spent 26 years remains a mystery. The Copenhagen postmark shows July 2000, while the Los Angeles postmark reads August 2026. Sheppard's mail carrier suggested it may have fallen behind equipment at a postal facility before someone discovered it and sent it on its way.

Sheppard isn't searching for logical explanations. The postcard arrived exactly when he needed to feel connected to his parents again, offering comfort he couldn't find during his father's final days.

"This was, to me, almost a postcard from heaven," he said, finding peace in their words after all these years.
